Braggin' Bass...

May, usually nice and pleasant. Right!... Who turned on the fans and left them on high speed?.. Despite the wind, many clients experienced some great fishing and there were many that caught their personal best topwater LmBass.
A 5lb pound LmBass is a nice fish in anyone’s book.  Hook a 5lb’r or better on a flyrod and on topwater and you have your hands full.  Keeping them pinned is hard so NEVER stop stripping line. Throw in a 6,7,8lb or better fish and  you will be asking for some help from above to get them to the boat.  Why?....many are never pinned well and if given the chance, they find a way to dislodge that hook.
The key is to stick’em hard, never stop pulling and work those angles.
Take it to the next level as Alan did one afternoon. Most of the day was pretty slow but the rewards for hard work came later in the day.  In fact, the huge payoffs came within an hours time and within a few hundred yards of each other.
As his brother John and I watched Alan cast into a very descript piece of prime bass water, the deerhair diver dropped right into the zone. Within a couple of strips the water boiled with a classic sucking, blowup grab of a big fish. It was a big fish and I immediately starting barking orders to Alan to keep stripping, keep stripping, keep stripping!!! Alan heard me loud and clear and did exactly that.  The fish tried to tail-walk across a weedline but it couldn’t get it’s whole body out of the water. It  made for some exciting visuals. After  a  few tows through the weeds and  around  and under the boat, I finally had my grips on a 7.5lb postspawn hen. What a great fish!
Within an hour, Alan was hooked up on another nice fish and after a good tussle around the boat we landed a very solid 6.5lb fish. Needless to say i wasn’t barking as loud the second time around and Alan never stopped pulling on that fish.
That is the difference in landing a trophy and just talking about the one that got away.  Sometimes they just win, and that is OK too, that’s what keeps us coming back....!
Summer is here and the Bass are starting into their summer pattern. The fishing is good and my guide book has openings. Let’s go fishing!
